Prospects of harnessing solar energy in Ukraine

Specific rates of solar energy influx and its distribution at each of the regions of Ukraine were identified based on the results of statistical processing of meteorological data on incoming solar radiation. Average annual amount of  aggregate solar radiation per 1m2 of ground surface at the territory of Ukraine is around 1070 kW-hour/m2 in northern Ukraine, 1400 kW- hour/m2 and higher in the Crimea.

Solar energy capacity in Ukraine is great enough to introduce photothermal and photovoltaic equipment throughout Ukraine. Photothermal equipment can operate efficiently for seven months in the southern regions of Ukraine (April through October) and for five months (May through September) in the northern regions. Whereas photovoltaic equipment can operate efficiently throughout the year.

Flat solar panels using direct solar radiation along with diffuse radiation, prove to be efficient in the environmental conditions of Ukraine. Concentrating solar panels display sufficient efficiency only in the southern regions of Ukraine.

Should manufacturers show interest in producing large batches of  photovoltaic equipment, it would be introduced on a large-scale and considerably save energy resources; as one may notice rather high level of readiness for mass production and a wide range of possible ways to apply solar power in Ukraine.

The use of photovoltaic devices for convertion of sunlight into electricity should be at the cutting edge. In Ukraine, significant supplies of raw materials, industrial, scientific and technical resources are available for manufacturing photovoltaic devices, that could satisfy the demands of domestic consumers  as well as secure over two thirds of production for export.

The above-mentioned rates of incoming solar radiation are fundamental for the introduction of solar energy equipment and are primarily recommended for use by designers to select the type of equipment (photothermal, photovoltaic systems) and to establish its optimum capacity and the efficient operation period in a specific area.
